Vitale

Palazzo Vitale sits within a long, narrow block in Ortigia’s Graziella quarter, its main facade lining up with its neighbours along Via Vittorio Veneto. The building does not particularly distinguish itself today, either architecturally or compositionally; but once, together with the other structures in this row, it formed a continuous street wall that gave the avenue its character. The rear elevation faces an internal courtyard, where the building’s massing becomes more varied, with different floor heights and rooflines. Originally the property ran the full depth of the block; now only part of the lot retains the palazzo’s core. On the eastern side of the courtyard, a small door in a high wall opens directly onto Via dei Tolomei. This passage, together with the main entrance, once allowed a semi-public shortcut across the island towards the sea, a quiet reminder of how these urban blocks were stitched through with routes not always visible from the street.
