Villa Valvasone, Varmo, De Concina, Masetti, Zannini

This is a villa of composed, formal grace, a country seat built for both rural retreat and the display of status. The complex is arranged around a central manor house and two flanking barchesse, the wing-like service buildings that face the park. The main house rises three storeys above a semi-basement, its southern prospect defined by two wide stone staircases leading up to a loggia. This entrance to the salone is held up by a pair of half-columns and two central columns, a classical statement of arrival. At piano nobile level, the regular rhythm of the windows is broken by a grand triple-arched opening, its round arch topped by a keystone. On the ground floor, the main portal and some windows are protected by wrought-iron grilles with floral motifs, a decorative flourish. The northern front, facing the street, repeats the motif of a round-arched portal with a stone frame, surmounted by another triple window. The barchesse are centred on their own stone-columned loggias, each topped by a curved pediment. All is encircled by a park of statues and fine specimen trees.
