villa Chiappetti

Villa Chiappetti sits outside the historic centre, deep within a large estate. Two long, tree-lined avenues lead to it: the main entrance, from via Tenente Luigi Rossi, is announced by an imposing portal; a secondary approach comes from via del Mortaio. The villa is square in plan, with a ground floor of living quarters and service rooms, partly vaulted in the traditional gavetta style, partly covered with more recent reinforced concrete ceilings. Below, a semi-basement retains barrel-vaulted cellars once used for storing wine and other produce. The piano nobile above is also vaulted, and several rooms preserve frescoed walls and ceilings, with marble floors. A two-pitched roof, tiled in brick, crowns the structure. Late-twentieth-century alterations, including clumsy concrete additions, have diminished its architectural integrity. Yet the villa’s setting, its surrounding estate, the surviving original fabric, and recent archaeological excavations in the garden that have yielded Roman finds, still endows it with considerable historical and architectural significance.
