Verlasce

At the edge of a Roman amphitheatre, a structure that once echoed with the roar of crowds now stands as a quiet, two-storey barn and storehouse. Its trapezoidal plan is regular and purposeful, a pragmatic adaptation of ancient stonework. The walls are built in opera incerta, rough, irregular masonry of limestone and tufa, patched with plaster and filled with rubble, typical of later reuse. Above, a double-pitched roof of wooden beams and terracotta tiles shelters six storage rooms, each of varying size: 72, 76, 144, 106, 126, and 90 square metres. These chambers, once perhaps stables or granaries, are a quiet testament to the way Roman bones are often repurposed into the sinews of rural life. The amphitheatre’s grand arcades are gone, but this fragment endures, a solid, unglamorous piece of history that chose utility over spectacle.
