Veleia

The Compendio archeologico della città romana di Veleia is the archaeological site of an ancient town in Emilia, about 15 kilometres south of Piacenza. Veleia is mentioned by Pliny among the towns of the eighth region, though its inhabitants, the Veleiates, were ethnically Ligurians; under Vespasian’s census they were remarkable for their longevity. The site was lost until 1747, when ploughmen unearthed the Tabula alimentaria, now in Parma’s National Archaeological Museum. This largest inscribed bronze tablet of antiquity records Trajan’s scheme before 102 CE: 1,044,000 sesterces were assigned on mortgage bonds to 46 estates, totalling over 13,000,000 sesterces. The interest at 5% supported 266 boys and 6 girls monthly: 16 sesterces for boys, 12 for girls.
