A ridge of Doric temples above the Sicilian coast, the grandest Greek ruins outside Greece. Ancient Akragas was one of the richest cities of the Greek world, and its citizens spent that wealth on temples. The Temple of Concordia survives almost whole because early Christians turned it into a church. The unfinished Temple of Olympian Zeus would have been among the largest Doric temples ever built, held up by giant stone figures called telamons. Pindar called Akragas the most beautiful city of mortals. Almond trees blossom among the columns each February.
