Urbino

A near-perfect small Renaissance court, preserved almost whole. In the 15th century the soldier-duke Federico da Montefeltro, the one with the broken nose painted always in profile, turned this Marche hill town into a beacon of humanist culture. His Ducal Palace is less a fortress than an idea of civilised life in stone, and his studiolo, a tiny study panelled in trompe-l'oeil marquetry, is a masterpiece of illusion. Raphael was born a few streets away. When the court faded, so did the town, which is why it still looks the way it did.
