At the edge of Lavinium, thirteen weathered altars lie in a long, solemn procession, their stones bearing witness to centuries of Latin worship. This was a federal sanctuary, a gathering place for the peoples of ancient Latium to honour shared gods, perhaps at the festival of the Latin League. The altars themselves are not uniform: they range in date from the sixth to the second century BC, each addition a layer of devotion and political alliance laid upon the last. Nearby, a modest tumulus marks a heroon, a sacred site linked to Aeneas, the Trojan wanderer claimed as a founding father by Rome. The cult here was both pious and pragmatic, a way to bind communities through ritual. The site feels deliberate, almost processional, as if the altars were arranged for a ceremony that never quite ended.
