Torretta Belvedere

The Torre del Belvedere, a tower that once formed part of the old town’s defensive system, still stands as a fragment of a more fortified past. It is not a solitary structure; the tower belongs to a larger complex that includes a gate into the historic borgo, a long east-facing wall overlooking the harbour, and adjacent rooms. The gate and the tower itself display interesting typological features, though the adjoining volume is a later recomposition. Within the building there is now a shop and a storage room. The tower’s name, Belvedere, suggests it was once a place from which to take in the view, though its original purpose was more pragmatic than picturesque. It remains a quiet, stony reminder of how Italian hill towns once guarded their approach from the sea, their medieval defences later softened by habitation and trade.
