Torre Mordillo

Torre Mordillo, also known as Torre del Mordillo, is an 11th-century watchtower that gives its name to the site. It stands on a hill in the territory of Spezzano Albanese, in the province of Cosenza, overlooking the confluence of the Esaro and Coscile rivers (the former a tributary of the Crati, the latter a sub-tributary). The tower’s strategic position, commanding the meeting of these two waterways, suggests its original purpose was surveillance and defence. Today, it remains a quiet landmark, its medieval stonework a reminder of the region’s layered history, from Norman watchposts to the modern landscape of Calabria.
