Torre Iudica

On a lonely ridge in the Sicilian interior stands Torre Iudica, a tower of plain but purposeful presence. Its body is built of rough, unhewn limestone blocks, once plastered over, with the corners, base and architectural trim picked out in neatly squared calcarenite stone, a practical contrast between the rugged and the refined.

Inside, the ground floor is solidly vaulted and floored in timber, while the piano nobile above is more deceptive: its painted barrel vaults are mere lath and plaster, a light, theatrical trick. The roof mixes a terrace with a tiled pitched section, set at differing heights. This is a defensive tower of the sort that dot the Sicilian countryside, built to watch the land and offer refuge. Torre Iudica stands square, stolid and slightly secretive, its real history written in the quiet tension between honest stonework and a room pretending to be grander than it is.
