torre, di controllo, difensiva

In a landscape where stone whispers history, this cylindrical tower stands as a sentinel of a more perilous age. Built of small stone blocks, its circular plan was a pragmatic choice, offering no corners for an enemy to shelter against. The small beams visible on its exterior once supported wooden scaffolding or perhaps defensive hoardings, projecting a faint shadow of the structure’s martial purpose.

Unlike the fortified residences of noble families, this tower was never a home. It was a defensive outpost, pure and simple. Its entrance, deliberately placed on the side opposite the steep slope, made direct assault awkward. Two windows, one of them circular, pierce the wall facing the town, offering a watchful eye over the settlement below. Such towers were common across the Italian countryside, a network of vigilance in times when a distant glint of armour could mean trouble. This one, stripped of domestic comfort, speaks plainly of its sole function: to see and be seen, to warn and to defend.
