Torre del Porticciolo

The Torre del Porticciolo, historically and officially known in Algherese Catalan as La Torre del Portitxol, stands on the beach of Portitxol near Alghero in Sardinia. Its name, through various transcriptions over the centuries, consistently refers to a small landing place for vessels of modest size. Built in the second half of the 16th century by Alghero’s coral fishermen, who used this beach to repair their boats, the tower is a square-plan, stone watchtower typical of the period’s coastal defence system. It remains a sturdy, weathered landmark against the Mediterranean backdrop.
