Tomba di giganti Serdis

The Tomba dei Giganti, or Giants’ Tomb, is a type of monumental collective burial found in Sardinia, built by the Nuragic civilisation. These structures were designed to hold the remains of an entire community, and their sheer scale, often twenty metres long or more, gave rise to the folkloric belief that they were the work of giants, not men.

This particular example consists of a long, rectangular funerary chamber, its walls formed by upright stone slabs set into the ground like blades. A single, monolithic slab, slightly concave on its inner face, closes the gallery at the north-western end; the roof is now missing. The entrance is narrowed by two rectangular blocks, which pinch the rows of orthostats. An exedra, a semicircular forecourt, extends in front of the chamber, though its curving arms are now barely visible, tracing only a shallow arc. The entire structure was once covered by a tumulus of earth and stone, retained by a wall of small and medium-sized blocks, both quadrangular and polygonal.
