Tomb of the Winged Demons

In the necropolises of ancient Italy, tombs were often carved directly into the living tufa rock, creating doorways to the underworld that mimicked the homes of the living. The Tomb of the Winged Demons is one such chamber, its façade a study in solemn geometry. At its centre, a broad recessed panel, about three metres wide, frames a rectangular niche. Within that niche, the faint outline of a false door is traced in stone, its curved projections suggesting a portal that was never meant to open.

Above, the remains of a low tympanum and a central ridge hint at a temple-like frontage, now worn by centuries. Some two metres below this carved face, a small arched entrance leads into a modest rectangular chamber, just over two metres wide and less than two deep. The ceiling is so low that you cannot stand upright, nor confirm whether the stone benches, so common in such tombs for the repose of the dead, were ever cut here.
