Temple of Hera at Foce del Sele

The Heraion alla foce del Sele is an archaeological site of an Ancient Greek sanctuary complex dedicated to the goddess Hera, originally built in Magna Graecia. It once stood at the mouth of the Sele river, about 8 km north of the Greek city of Poseidonia (famous for its three standing temples). Over centuries, alluvial sediment from the river has shifted the coastline, so the site now lies roughly 2.3 km inland from the modern shore. The sanctuary was a significant religious centre, and its excavated remains include foundations, altars and votive offerings, offering a tangible link to the colonial Greek world of southern Italy.
