Temple of Concordia

The Temple of Concordia, an ancient Greek temple of Magna Graecia, stands in the Valle dei Templi in Agrigento on Sicily’s south coast. It is the largest and best-preserved Doric temple in Sicily, and one of the best-preserved Greek temples overall, particularly of the Doric order. Located a kilometre east of the Temple of Heracles, its remarkable survival owes much to its conversion into a Christian basilica in the 6th century, which spared it from the stone-robbing that claimed so many of its neighbours. The temple’s harmonious proportions and near-complete colonnade of 34 columns offer a rare, tangible link to the architectural ambitions of the Greek colonies that once flourished here.
