One of the great Etruscan cities, now empty fields and a lonely castle. Vulci grew rich on trade and bronze-working, exporting across the Mediterranean, and its tombs have yielded thousands of Greek painted vases, so many they helped teach the modern world about Greek pottery. The Francois Tomb held frescoes of Etruscan warriors that rank among their finest painting. A humpbacked medieval bridge still leaps the ravine beside the ruins. There is no town here now, only the shape of a vanished power in the Maremma grass.
