Tempietto sull'isolotto, ruderi del lago

On a tiny island in a lake, a curious little temple stands alone. Its plan is a studied eccentricity: a rectangular body capped with an almost-elliptical vault, fronted by a prostyle portico. The whole structure is raised on a pseudo-crepidoma, a stylised echo of the Greek steps that once elevated temples above the sacred ground.

This is not a true ancient ruin but a later, deliberate caprice, a neo-classical folly built for picturesque effect. Its walls are of rendered tufa, dressed with stucco pilasters, framed doorways, and shallow niches that once held statues. Inside, the floor is laid in the Venetian pattern; above, the vault presses low. The builder understood the language of classical architecture well enough to speak it with a wink. Foundations are uncertain, sunk in tufa beneath the waterline. The whole effect is that of a stage set: a temple in miniature, stranded on its lake, perfectly composed and entirely self-aware.
