Teatro Petrella

This is the Teatro Petrella, a compact block of considerable size, eighteen by thirty-one and a half metres, its front turned squarely towards the old town. The façade is a study in symmetrical composure: a central avant-corps flanked by two wings. At ground level, a round-arched stone portal marks the entrance. Four low-arched windows sit either side; above, four slightly projecting Ionic pilasters in Istrian stone frame three windows, each with a glazed section topped by a fixed lunette. These windows are further emphasised by blind arches with white keystones, while those on the wings are left plain. The central body is capped by a tympanum resting on an Ionic entablature; within it, a medallion bears the likeness of Maestro Petrella. Three acroteria crown the pediment, phoenixes on the sides, a lyre at centre. The east elevation, more legible in its tripartite structure, shows seven low-arched ground-floor windows and seven matching arched windows above, now blocked. This side houses the entrance hall, ticket office, old refreshment room, and the foyer above, while the second body contains the stage.
