The oldest surviving indoor theatre in the world, and the last work of Andrea Palladio. Designed in 1580 for a learned Vicenza academy, it recreates a Roman theatre inside a hall, a semicircle of seats facing a monumental stage wall. Behind the central arch, Palladio's successor Scamozzi built streets in forced perspective, wooden buildings that appear to recede for hundreds of metres though the space is only a few. Lit for its opening play in 1585, it still stages performances: a permanent stage set of an ideal Renaissance city, four and a half centuries old.
