Teatro Golfarelli

The Teatro Golfarelli is a curious composite of a place. It occupies a gently sloping site, its rectangular plan and horseshoe-shaped auditorium squeezed in among other buildings. The main façade is a modest affair of two storeys, divided by simple banded cornices and framed by false rusticated plasterwork. Three arched entrances at ground level lead to a small atrium; above, a central French window with a tiny balcony is flanked by plain rectangular windows and two memorial plaques.

Inside, the theatre has three tiers of boxes, unadorned except for some recent, unconvincing stucco. The original stage, however, was entirely remodelled after a fire in 1970. That restoration added a rear block and, rather drastically, reduced the stage to a mere loggia for the bar’s tables. No notable cultural assets survive within. It is a theatre that has become a shell for its own social function, its theatrical past now largely a backdrop for drinks.
