Teatro Alessandro Bonci

The Teatro Alessandro Bonci rises on level ground, detached on all sides, its irregular plan combining a semi-elliptical cavea with a rectangular stage. The building’s composite volume divides into three parts: a portico with foyer, the auditorium itself, and a generous stage area. The principal façade, facing the square, is composed of two architectural orders crowned by a dentilled pediment enclosing a coat of arms and two statues. The lower order features a portico with rusticated pilasters, sheltering the theatre and conservatory entrances; above, the second order is marked vertically by Ionic-style brick half-columns, with windows and bas-relief panels by Bernasconi of Bologna. A white marble balustrade separates the orders, while a banded cornice and dentilled entablature sit beneath the pediment.

Inside, the theatre follows the classic Italian plan: four tiers of boxes plus a gallery. The first tier bears fine painted decorations, the upper tiers stucco work, and the ceiling is delicately painted with monochrome grotesques, tragic scenes, and four roundels of the Muses, all by F. Migliari of Ferrara.
