A seaside cave that the emperor Tiberius turned into a dining room. At Sperlonga, between Rome and Naples, a natural grotto opening onto the sea was fitted with a circular pool and filled with colossal marble sculptures staging scenes from the Odyssey, Odysseus blinding the Cyclops, his ship seized by the monster Scylla. Diners reclined as if inside the myth. A rockfall, which nearly killed Tiberius according to the sources, later buried the sculptures; smashed into thousands of fragments, they were rediscovered in 1957 and reassembled in the museum beside the cave.
