santuario, nazionale, Tempio Nazionale a Maria Madre e Regina di Monte Grisa (Santuario di Monte Grisa)

On the summit of Monte Grisa, 350 metres above the sea, stands the Santuario Nazionale a Maria Madre e Regina. This vast concrete church, completed in 1966 after a long and fraught genesis, is a monument not only to faith but to the tangled political and religious history of Trieste in the aftermath of the Second World War. Its construction, begun in the very year the conflict ended, became a kind of architectural seal on a period of profound uncertainty for the city, caught between competing national claims and ideological forces. The sanctuary is a place of spiritual renewal and inner peace, and its significance is recognised as a cultural asset, emblematic of those complex post-war years. Today, it remains an important stop for pilgrimage groups travelling to and from Međugorje, who celebrate Mass here in thanksgiving. A curious, brooding landmark on the Karst plateau, it rewards the journey with its sheer, uncompromising presence.
