santuario, mariano, Maria SS.ma delle Grazie

In the hilltop village of Genzano di Lucania, a rectangular stone bearing the image of the Madonna and Child was discovered on 25 March 1621, in a place called Capo d'Acqua. This find, in the Vallone dei Greci, stirred such local enthusiasm that the icon was carried to a nearby chapel and venerated as the Madonna Santissima. A confraternity was formally instituted that same year, aggregating to a Roman archconfraternity and establishing the Madonna as the town's protector.

The church that now houses the icon is a Baroque sanctuary, elevated to that dignity in 2013. Its principal feast, preceded by a novena, falls on the first or second Sunday of August. Throughout July, the month dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, the faithful who pray devoutly before the ancient icon, according to the Pope's intentions, may receive a partial indulgence. The sanctuary belongs to the parish of Santa Maria della Platea e Maria SS.ma delle Grazie, its full, formal name a testament to the layered devotions of this Lucanian community.
