At the foot of Caraffa del Bianco, in the quiet green countryside of the Ionian hinterland, this sanctuary began as a small rural church, founded in the mid-1600s by a local noble family. It has since been remade. A fire in 1994 destroyed almost everything; reconstruction, completed in 2000, gave the building its present form. Inside, a marble statue of the Madonna and Child survives from 1622, carved by an unknown sculptor of southern Italy. The church was formally recognised as a diocesan Marian sanctuary in 2002, a status that brings certain juridical arrangements, most recently updated in 2025. The setting is peaceful, the architecture Baroque in spirit if not entirely original, and the main feast day is celebrated in the usual late-summer manner. A place of layered histories: noble patronage, disaster, renewal, and the steady administrative attention of the diocese.
