santuario, mariano, diocesano, Santuario Maria SS.ma del Monte Carmelo

On Monte Poro, 711 metres above sea level, the Santuario Maria SS.ma del Monte Carmelo is a sanctuary that serves as a gathering point for the surrounding diocesan territory and the plains beyond, drawing pilgrims from across the provinces of Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria. Surrounded by woods and clear, cool waters, it is approached on foot via the CAI 715 sea-to-mountain path, or by bicycle; a fountain at the crossroads near the sanctuary offers rest and refreshment.

The sacred site was built following an apparition of the ‘Mamma bella’ to a humble shepherd boy who had left his family aged twelve for the monastic life. The land was donated, and construction began in the late nineteenth century. Initially dedicated to a patron saint of shepherds, the church was later expanded with new rooms and a bell tower, and rededicated to the Madonna del Carmine. The sanctuary remains a place of quiet pilgrimage, where forest and mountain meet devotion.
