santuario, mariano, diocesano, Santuario Beata Vergine Maria del Divin Pastore

In the heart of Aspromonte, cradled among the mountains at the foot of Montalto, lies the Santuario della Madonna di Polsi. This medieval church, known locally as the Madonna della Montagna, is a place where faith feels elemental, simple, spontaneous, and deeply rooted in the landscape. Pilgrims from across Calabria and Sicily gather here from late August for the annual feast, a nine-day novena culminating in celebrations where Eucharistic liturgy mingles with tarantelle and folk songs.

On the altar stands a tufa stone statue of the Madonna and Child, carved in the round by Sicilian or Neapolitan craftsmen. Devotion here takes visceral forms: parents strip children who have survived grave illnesses before the sacred image in thanks. On the feast’s vigil, some devotees sleep within the sanctuary, an echo of the ancient rite of incubatio. Since 1994, the statue’s coronation occurs every quarter-century. This is not a hidden gem; it is a raw, living sanctuary of popular piety, carved into the rock and the calendar.
