The Cathedral of Cosenza, dedicated to the Madonna del Pilerio, is a Renaissance church that serves as the principal sanctuary of the diocese. It was formally elevated to a diocesan sanctuary in stages during the late twentieth century, reflecting a long-standing popular devotion. The primary feast day is celebrated on 12 February, preceded by a week of prayers, drawing many pilgrims. On special occasions, an icon of the Madonna is carried in procession instead of the usual statue, as occurred during the Marian Year of 1988, the Jubilee of 2000, and the cathedral’s eighth centenary in 2022. The origins of the cult of the Madonna del Pilerio are traditionally traced back centuries. The cathedral chapter maintains the site’s historical, artistic and religious significance.
