The Santuario Basilica di Santa Maria di Monserrato stands in Vallelonga, a modern-era church whose origins reach back to the early Middle Ages. The cult of the Madonna of Monserrato, represented by an 18th-century wooden statue, is tied to the campaigns of Ludovico Pio, King of the Franks, against the Moors. In 806, his conquests extended to “Monserrat”, a mountain near Barcelona where a sanctuary and monastery later arose following an apparition to shepherds in 880.

This devotion spread to Calabria, with documents in the diocesan historical archive of Mileto dated 1550 recording its presence in Vallelonga, fostered by the Galati family who built a convent, church and altar. A pastoral visit in 1586 confirms this. The statue was crowned in 1932, the church declared a sanctuary in 1956, and elevated to a Minor Basilica in 1971. In 2002, it was recognised as a Diocesan Marian Sanctuary. The patronal feast falls on the second Sunday of July, preceded by a novena, with pilgrims walking from neighbouring towns.
