In the historic centre of Giardinello stands the Santuario di Maria SS.ma della Mercede, a church whose origins are as pragmatic as they are pious. During the First World War, the local diocese authorised the sale of ex-votos, those small, grateful offerings left by the faithful, and with the proceeds, this sanctuary was built. It opened for worship in May 1918.

An icon of the Madonna had arrived in Giardinello around the mid-nineteenth century, likely from the Convent of San Lorenzo di Carini, once tended by the Mercedarian fathers. It first resided in a small roadside shrine, which still survives. In 1890, a local woman bought a plot of land to build a proper chapel, but funds ran short and the work stalled. The later, more successful effort used those sold tokens of devotion to complete what had been started.

The sanctuary was formally elevated in 1985, a recognition of the community’s enduring attachment to its patroness, whose principal feast is celebrated on 24 September.
