santuario, "in perpetuum", Maria SS.ma di Termini

The Santuario di Maria SS.ma di Termini, in Gasperina, is a church of Norman foundation. Some old documents refer to it as the “Madonna de’ Tremiti”. According to one source, it was built in the 11th century at the behest of Count Roger d’Altavilla. The structure lacks a firmly recorded construction date. The present limestone statue of the Madonna was restored in 1872 by a certain Pietro da Satriano.

The site’s name, “dei Termini”, derives from its position at the boundaries of monastic lands. In the Norman period, the successors of the founder of the nearby Carthusian order administered properties including Gasperina, reinforcing ties with Rome and spreading devotion to the Madonna at this frontier.

On 27 June 1992, the church was elevated to a sanctuary “in perpetuum” by the archbishop of Catanzaro-Squillace. It remains a place of quiet, enduring local devotion, its origins half-lost to the centuries but its presence still marking a territorial and spiritual edge.
