The Santuario Diocesano San Francesco di Paola sits near Paterno, a sanctuary built on the story of a saint and a community’s invitation. In the late 1400s, the local university asked Francis of Paola to establish an eremo, a hermitage, here, gifting him a small chapel once used by a confraternity. Construction began around 1471-1472, after the Archbishop of Cosenza approved the community and extended mendicant privileges. The saint himself oversaw the building of what became known as the ‘convent of miracles’, dedicating the church to the Annunciation.

The site is less a remote ruin and more a living complex: there is ample parking, a garden, a museum, a library, and a guesthouse for up to thirty pilgrims seeking a quiet retreat. Until the 1970s or 80s, a monthly bulletin, L’Eco del Santuario di Paterno, was published here. In 1999, the convent was formally designated a Diocesan Sanctuary. It remains an oasis of peace, where Renaissance devotion meets a still-active spiritual community.
