santuario, diocesano, Santuario Diocesano Madonna della Neve o del Sirino

On the summit of Monte Sirino, nearly two thousand metres up, the Santuario Diocesano Madonna della Neve stands as a stark, white beacon above the forests of the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano. It is a church of the Baroque period, but its true architecture is the sky and the stone around it. This is a place where devotion is measured in altitude and effort. The sanctuary was formally recognised as a diocesan shrine in 1991, following a papal visit to Basilicata, and it remains a focal point for a rugged, enduring faith. Twice a year the mountain comes alive with pilgrims: in June, a statue of the Madonna and Child is carried shoulder-high to the summit in a slow, straining procession; in early August, the faithful climb again for a two-day festival. The church belongs to the parish of San Nicola di Bari, but up here, it feels like its own jurisdiction, a thin, cold place between earth and heaven.
