The Santuario di Santa Filomena at Mugnano del Cardinale is a Baroque church whose origins are older than its present dedication. The building was first raised in the late sixteenth century in honour of the Madonna delle Grazie, and her statue from around 1750 still sits above the high altar. The structure was expanded into a sanctuary from 1617, funded by timber sales from the local woods.

The church’s significance shifted dramatically in the early nineteenth century, when the body of a young female martyr, discovered in Rome, was brought here. Within the sanctuary, her tomb slabs, the ‘Miraculous Altar’, and a miraculous statue are preserved. Also notable is the chair upon which Pauline Jaricot was seated when she received a healing. The sanctuary became a centre of devotion that spread across the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and beyond, drawing numerous prominent visitors over the decades.
