At Paravati, in the deep south of Calabria, stands a church that feels less like a building and more like the fulfilment of a promise. The Santuario Cuore Immacolato di Maria Rifugio delle Anime is a very modern sanctuary, consecrated only in 2022 and elevated to its current dignity in 2024, on the centenary of the birth of the mystic Natuzza Evolo.
According to her testimony, the Madonna appeared to her in 1944 and expressed a desire: a great church, a house of prayer and a refuge for souls. That vision, held quietly for decades, eventually became stone and mortar. The sanctuary is therefore a place shaped by private revelation, where the spiritual work of prayer groups, the ‘Cenacoli di Preghiera’, has long preceded the physical walls.
Its purpose is clear from the title: a refuge. Not a monument, but a place for reconciliation and for celebrating the Eucharist. The main feast days fall in November, May and August, drawing pilgrims to this otherwise unassuming town, where one woman’s quiet certainty has left a tangible, lasting mark on the landscape.
