The Santuario Diocesano San Francesco di Paola in Corigliano Calabro is a Renaissance church with a tangible sense of origin story. Founded around 1476, it was the first convent established by the saint after he received papal approval, built outside the Diocese of Cosenza with the patronage of the local princes. The church’s foundation is tied to a plea for healing: the rulers sought the saint’s intercession for their ailing firstborn son.

The building itself reflects the typical austerity of a mendicant foundation, though its history is anything but quiet. The main feast day on 25 April commemorates the town’s salvation from the devastating earthquake of 1836, a shift from an earlier July celebration that marked a previous seismic disaster in 1783. Other feast days honour the Madonna del Miracolo and a local blessed, reinforcing the sanctuary’s role as a resilient focal point for a community long acquainted with both faith and geological unrest.
