santuario, diocesano, regionale, basilica, Santuario Basilica San Francesco di Paola

On a slope between the hills and the sea, the Santuario Basilica San Francesco di Paola rises from a landscape the Frate Minimo himself once chose. This is a Renaissance church, but its life is not frozen in the past; it was raised to a Minor Basilica in the early twentieth century, later named a Diocesan Sanctuary, and most recently a Regional Sanctuary. Such layered honours reflect a living tradition of pilgrimage. From late spring through summer, people come from across Calabria, some walking all night along an ancient, wooded mountain path the hermit is said to have trodden himself. They arrive at dawn, seeking the miraculous waters of the ‘Cucchiarella’. The main feast falls in early May, with votive observances scattered through the year. This is a church of the road and the sea, its patron a protector of mariners and of the region, a place where the natural world and the sacred feel entwined.
