In the Campanian hills above Caposele, the Santuario di San Gerardo Maiella rises from a conventual complex that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. The first certain record of a church here dates to 1527, already bearing the name Sancta Maria Mater Domini. This was a modest sanctuary until the arrival of a frail young Redemptorist brother in 1754. Gerardo Maiella, despite chronic ill health that had once made his superiors hesitate to admit him to the Congregation, proved an indefatigable worker, known for his penance, profound charity and uncommon cheerfulness. He died here of tuberculosis the following year, aged just twenty-nine. His tomb became a magnet for the faithful, and by the early twentieth century the old church could no longer contain them. The present basilica was built between 1913 and 1929, its consecration marking the transformation of a medieval shrine into a major pilgrimage destination. The sanctuary remains a spiritual anchor for the diocese, its architecture a testament to the enduring pull of a saint who lived only a few years yet left an indelible mark.
