On a hilltop in the Basilicata, Tolve’s principal church began as a Norman foundation, its stout stone walls a reminder of that era’s pragmatic piety. Now a diocesan sanctuary and minor basilica, it is dedicated to San Rocco, the city’s patron since time immemorial. This is no quiet chapel; for centuries it has drawn pilgrims from across the Acerenza archdiocese, neighbouring regions of Basilicata and Puglia, and even from northern Italy and abroad.

The church’s heart is a polychrome wooden statue of the saint, which twice a year, in August and September, is solemnly ‘dressed’ in gold ex-votos offered by the faithful. Processions follow, animated with traditional prayers and a local hymn of a hundred verses recounting the saint’s life. A pilgrim house and a small museum display the accumulated ex-votos: painted tablets, photographs, and objects that speak, without words, of gratitude and faith.
