On a low hill at Castrovillari’s historic heart, this sanctuary rises 350 metres above the surrounding plain, its position a natural terrace over the Pollino mountain range. Built in 1090 by order of Count Roger II of Normandy, it was conceived not as a place of worship but as a fortress: the highest point in town, intended to defend against enemy raids and, more tellingly, to protect the Norman court from the hostility of the conquered populace. The Norman period in southern Italy was one of consolidation through stone and steel, and this structure speaks to that uneasy dominion.

Today, the building has been transformed. Since 1997 it has served as a diocesan sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Castello, and in 2022 it was elevated to a minor basilica. The principal feast, on 1 May, is preceded by a solemn novena. On 30 April, women in traditional Castrovillari costume accompany the rite of the laying of gold and the crowning of the sacred image, a local custom that layers folk piety over Norman stone.
