At 1,520 metres, the Santuario Basilica della Madonna di Pietralba, or Maria Weißenstein, stands alone in the high mountain landscape, a place that feels as much a part of the rock as the sky. From here, the great Dolomite chains unfurl: the Catinaccio, blushing at sunset; the Marmolada; the Gran Vernel; the Latemar. These are peaks of a Unesco World Heritage site, and the basilica sits among them like a quiet, watchful presence.

Built in the Renaissance period, it is a sanctuary and a minor basilica, serving a diocese that shifted from Trento to Bolzano-Bressanone in 1964. Its principal feast is the third Sunday of September, though the 15th of August still draws the largest crowds, a lingering echo of older tradition. The sanctuary is among the most visited in the central Alps, drawing pilgrims and hikers alike from across the region and beyond. A place of altitude, austerity, and enduring devotion.
