santuario, diocesano, basilica minore, Madonna dei Poveri

In the centre of Seminara, the Santuario della Madonna dei Poveri stands as a modest but significant landmark. This is a church with layers of formal distinction: a diocesan sanctuary and a minor basilica, its full title honouring the ancient effigy of “Maria SS.ma Madre dei Poveri”. Such a site would have begun as a medieval place of worship, typical of the region’s many small churches built to house a revered image and serve a local community of the faithful. The sanctuary’s spiritual reach, however, extends well beyond the town. It is affiliated with the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, a connection that grants pilgrims the opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence on certain feast days throughout the year, most notably the Assumption in August and the Solemnity of the Madonna dei Poveri itself. A practical place for a pause, it offers parking, a pilgrim’s house, and a quiet welcome. In 2020, the entire town of Seminara was declared a “Civitas Mariae”, a City of Mary, binding the community ever more closely to its patroness.
