In the heart of Brindisi, the Santuario Cittadino di Santa Maria degli Angeli is a Baroque church with a very personal origin. Built on the birthplace of San Lorenzo da Brindisi (1559-1619), it was completed in 1609, with its façade facing west onto what is now Via San Lorenzo. The church was conceived as a centre for prayer and Franciscan spirituality, and it still holds the relics and memories of the saint, a Doctor of the Church.
A monastery for the Capuchin Poor Clares was added, finished in February 1619, but the religious community later dissolved, and the monastery was demolished in 1914 to make way for a primary school. The church itself passed to diocesan ownership. A 2005 renovation added a white marble altar with dark marble rectangles in the paliotto, and a matching lectern. Declared a Santuario Cittadino in 1999, it remains a place of quiet, layered history.
