At the foot of the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo, this sanctuary is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Italy and Europe. A Vatican ranking places it among the fifteen most frequented sanctuaries in the world, drawing two million pilgrims annually to the tomb of its youthful saint, a Passionist student. The devotion is extraordinary: over a thousand churches worldwide bear his name, and countless roads, schools, and even a motorway tollbooth are named after him.

The sanctuary is not merely a place of quiet prayer. Thousands of ex-votos testify to miracles, and the atmosphere is notably youthful. Each March, twelve thousand secondary-school students gather here for a spiritual day 'one hundred days before their final exams'. In late August, a five-day 'Tent City' festival draws young people from across Italy. The saint’s feasts are celebrated in parishes nationwide and beyond, wherever his cult has taken root.
