S. Nicolò e SS. Annunziata

The church of S. Nicolò e SS. Annunziata stands as a curious architectural palimpsest, its fabric speaking in several dialects of construction. The main body is built of rough, irregular stonework, with squared quoins at the corners to bind the mass. Overhead, masonry vaults span the spaces, solid and unadorned.

The campanile, however, tells a different story. Its lower half matches the church in its informal stone, but above, the builder’s hand changes abruptly. Here, a reinforced concrete frame rises, filled not with stone but with blocks of tufo, the local volcanic stone. The whole is capped by a thin concrete dome. This hybrid tower, part ancient craft, part modern engineering, is a pragmatic, unapologetic record of repair and adaptation. In Magna Graecia, where Greek temples once stood and later churches rose from their rubble, such layered building is not unusual. This church simply wears its history, and its compromises, on its sleeve.
