This former monastery is a quiet essay in architectural layering, where centuries of building methods sit side by side. The complex is defined by its load-bearing masonry: perimeter walls, cloister walls, and the columns that support cross-vaults of brick set edgewise. The southern and eastern ranges have been restored, their brickwork clean; at ground level in the east, concrete beams are visible in the ceilings, a modern intervention left unashamedly exposed. The northern and western ranges, by contrast, keep their original fabric: rubble stone walls, brick nogging, and a finish of earthy-toned plaster. On both floors, several rooms are covered with false vaults, flat terracotta slabs bedded in mortar, mimicking the real thing. Above, the roofs are timber-framed, with a reed matting base and a covering of curved tiles and capuchin-style pantiles. A place where each repair and replacement tells its own story, without fuss.
