The ruins of the old castle known as Del Carretto stand on a dominant position above the town of Cairo Montenotte, in the upper Bormida valley, province of Savona. This defensive structure is also called Castello Del Carretto - Scarampi, to distinguish it from the nearby 'Castellazzo' and from the castle in the Carretto hamlet. Its history as a fortification is etched into the stonework, though only fragments remain. The site offers a tangible sense of medieval military architecture, with its strategic vantage point overlooking the surrounding Ligurian landscape. A curious relic of feudal power, it now invites quiet contemplation of the centuries it has seen.
