Roman theater of Catania

In Catania, Sicily, the Complesso Archeologico del Teatro e dell'Odeon preserves two Roman theatres side by side. The larger theatre is a semicircular open-air structure, while the smaller one, the Odeon, was designed for musical performances. Both sit between Piazza San Francesco, via Vittorio Emanuele, via Timeo, and via Teatro Greco, in the city centre. They form part of the Parco archeologico greco-romano di Catania. The ruins offer a tangible sense of Roman civic life, though much of the original stonework has been absorbed into later buildings. The site is a quiet, slightly puzzling patch of antiquity amid Catania’s busy streets.
